A Cool Addition

Last Saturday, in a desperate attempt to soak up the beatiful weather and get some walking in, I took my 20-pound Terrier mutt, Tessie, and walked from my house to the Downtown Phoenix Public Market on the southeast corner of Central and McKinley. It was a good 3 miles or so, and I figured the walk would allow me to sample as many goodies as the market had to offer. And boy was it a lot! This magazine has praised the market dozens of times, and I’ve always been a fan, but I guess I haven’t been in a while, because it seems to have tripled in size. There were at least a dozen new vendors, including two new tasty chocolatiers (which I remember the best simply because I’m a bit of a sugar addict) and a sweet woman with the best baked goods I may have ever had. I walked away with 3 of her frosted carrot cookies (I ate them all that day), dark-chocolate-covered marshmallows, natural doggie treats, organic dates, and some rhubarb and fig jam. I would have bought more had it not been for the walk home. I was also very excited to learn that in addition to the Saturday hours, the market has recently extended its presence to Wednesday evenings from 4-8 p.m. I plan on taking another walk down there this Saturday (only so I can rationalize scarfing down another 3 carrot cookies), and I encourage you to do the same. What a cool thing for Phoenix that a decent market is finally taking off. Had I taken this walk earlier, it definitely would have been a part of our Cool Issue.
